Calcium Deficiency May Promote Breast CancerDavid Douglas has recently written on the Reuters Health website about animal studies conducted by researchers at the ANZAC Research Institute in Concord, Australia. Their research indicate that a deficiency in calcium, which accelerates the rate that calcium is absorbed back into the bone, promotes breast cancer tumor growth in bone. The results are published in the Cancer Research journal (October 7, 2007). The studies’ lead researcher, Dr. Colin R. Dunstan, told Reuters Health that “calcium deficiency, due either to low calcium in the diet or to vitamin D deficiency, is very common in older women, who are also the population at highest risk of breast cancer and breast cancer bone metastases.” To read the Reuters Health article about the studies, please click here.
